Pet-Safe Disinfecting

Your pet has just been diagnosed with some type of disease that your vet tells you could spread to other animals - or even humans! - in your household.

Then she says that in addition to isolating your sick pet, you need to disinfect any area where your pet has been.

Uh-oh! What do you do? What do you use?

Let us help you. First and most importantly, there are cleaning agents you should never use, particularly with cats, who are highly sensitive to certain chemical agents.

DO NOT USE:

  • Lysol or Pinesol! Both these products have phenol in them that is toxic to cats.Even when it is dry, it may stick to cat paws, and if a cat then licks its paws, it will ingest the poisonous substance.

  • Clorox and bleach products also are toxic to all pets. Clorox cleaners of any type and products with bleach in them should not be used where pets may walk or may inhale the fumes.

DO USE:

  • Distilled white vinegar disinfects surfaces (but don’t use on stone, marble, or granite; it may damage them).

  • 3% hydrogen peroxide will kill mold, fungi, and bacteria.

  • Pet-Safe Laundry Detergents can be found. Check for ones that are formulated with natural, plant-based ingredients that are free from harsh chemicals, fragrances, and dyes that could be harmful to pets


After you disinfect, you should wash any cleaning cloths you intend to reuse in one of the above-mentioned pet-safe laundry detergents.


DO-IT-YOURSELF PET SAFE (and environmentally friendly!) CLEANER
Ingredients to gather:
½ c. white vinegar
2 c. distilled vinegar
1 Tbsp. baking soda
3 drops Dawn dishwashing soap
If desired, 4-6 drops of lemon juice
1 spray bottle

Instructions:
Combine water and white vinegar in spray bottle.
Add baking soda and wait until it stops fizzing.
Add dish soap and, if desired, lemon juice. Shake gently to mix.

​​​​​​​*You can use this Pet Safe Cleaner on your countertops, floors, and other non-porous surfaces.
**Do not use it on granite, marble, or other stone surfaces because the vinegar may damage them.
